Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F and spray a 9×13-inch casserole dish with nonstick cooking spray.
- Evenly spread shredded chicken into the baking dish.
- Layer sliced black forest ham over the chicken.
- Place sliced Swiss cheese evenly over the ham.
- Melt unsalted butter in a saucepan over medium heat.
- Whisk in Dijon mustard, lemon juice (if using), garlic powder, salt, nutmeg (if using), and cayenne pepper (if using).
- Sprinkle in all-purpose flour and whisk until it forms a paste.
- Slowly add whole milk, one-quarter cup at a time, whisking until smooth after each addition.
- Allow the sauce to simmer for 4 minutes until it thickens, whisking occasionally.
- Pour the sauce over the cheese layer, spreading it evenly.
- Combine Panko breadcrumbs with softened butter in a bowl and spread it over the casserole.
- Bake uncovered for 30-40 minutes, until the sauce is bubbling and the Panko topping is golden brown.
- Remove from the oven and let it sit for 5 minutes. Sprinkle with chopped parsley (if using) and serve.

To make this dish healthier, try using whole wheat breadcrumbs, reduced-fat cheese, or adding steamed vegetables like spinach or broccoli.
