These soft, chocolatey cookies topped with creamy vanilla buttercream frosting are perfect for any occasion.

- 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp cream of tartar
- 1/8 tsp salt
- 1 cup unsalted butter (room temperature)
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 1 large egg (room temperature)
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 cup unsalted butter (room temperature)
- 4 cups sifted powdered sugar
- ¼ cup heavy cream
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/8 tsp salt
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a bowl, mix the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, cream of tartar, and salt.
- In another bowl, beat the butter and powdered sugar until light and fluffy.
- Add the egg and vanilla extract to the butter mixture and mix well.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture and combine until smooth.
- Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about 1/4 inch thick.
- Use cookie cutters to cut out shapes and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Bake for 8-10 minutes until the edges are firm.
- Let cookies cool on a cooling rack.
- In a separate bowl, beat the second cup of butter until creamy.
- Gradually add the sifted powdered sugar, heavy cream, vanilla extract, and salt; mix until smooth and fluffy.
- Frost the cooled cookies with the vanilla buttercream.
Notes
Use unsweetened applesauce for a lighter version or whole wheat flour for added nutrition. Store cookies in an airtight container for up to a week.
