Description

A warm, delicious bread filled with Italian herbs and cheese, perfect for any meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm water (around 110°F)
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon mixed Italian herbs (such as oregano, basil, thyme)
  • 1 cup shredded cheese (like mozzarella or provolone)
  • Optional: additional herbs for garnish

Instructions

  1. Dissolve the sugar in warm water and sprinkle the yeast over it; let sit until frothy for 5 to 10 minutes.
  2. Mix flour, salt, and Italian herbs in a large bowl and make a well in the center.
  3. Add the yeast mixture and olive oil to the well.
  4. Stir until a loose dough forms.
  5. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead until smooth, about 8 to 10 minutes.
  6. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a cloth, and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1 hour.
  7. Punch down the dough and knead in the cheese.
  8. Shape the dough into a loaf and place it in a greased loaf pan.
  9. Cover the loaf and let it rise for 30 minutes.
  10. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  11. Bake the bread for 25 to 30 minutes until golden and it sounds hollow when tapped.
  12. Cool the loaf on a wire rack before slicing and serving warm.

Notes

For a different flavor, try using fresh herbs, different types of cheese, or adding garlic. This bread pairs well with olive oil for dipping or can be used for sandwiches.
