A delightful twist on a classic comfort food, this grilled cheese features sweet pear and apple paired with sharp cheddar and savory caramelized onions.


Ingredients

  • 4 slices sourdough bread
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 medium pear, thinly sliced
  • 1 medium apple, thinly sliced
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
  • salt (to taste)
  • black pepper (to taste)

Instructions

  1. Melt 1 tablespoon of unsalted butter in a skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add the thinly sliced onions and a pinch of salt, cooking for about 10 minutes until golden brown.
  3. Stir in the balsamic vinegar and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes; remove and set aside.
  4. Melt the remaining tablespoon of butter in the same skillet over medium heat.
  5. On two slices of sourdough, layer half of the cheddar cheese.
  6. Add the caramelized onions, then layer on the thinly sliced apple and pear.
  7. Top with the remaining cheddar and cover with the other two slices of bread.
  8. Grill one sandwich for 4-5 minutes until golden brown, then flip and cook the other side for another 4-5 minutes until the cheese melts.
  9. Repeat with the second sandwich.
  10. Let cool for a minute, slice in half, and serve warm.

Notes

Swap cheddar for mozzarella or Swiss for a lighter option. Using whole-grain bread adds fiber. Pair with a salad or homemade soup.
