A delightful twist on a classic comfort food, this grilled cheese features sweet pear and apple paired with sharp cheddar and savory caramelized onions.
Ingredients

- 4 slices sourdough bread
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 medium pear, thinly sliced
- 1 medium apple, thinly sliced
- 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
- 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
- salt (to taste)
- black pepper (to taste)
Instructions
- Melt 1 tablespoon of unsalted butter in a skillet over medium heat.
- Add the thinly sliced onions and a pinch of salt, cooking for about 10 minutes until golden brown.
- Stir in the balsamic vinegar and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes; remove and set aside.
- Melt the remaining tablespoon of butter in the same skillet over medium heat.
- On two slices of sourdough, layer half of the cheddar cheese.
- Add the caramelized onions, then layer on the thinly sliced apple and pear.
- Top with the remaining cheddar and cover with the other two slices of bread.
- Grill one sandwich for 4-5 minutes until golden brown, then flip and cook the other side for another 4-5 minutes until the cheese melts.
- Repeat with the second sandwich.
- Let cool for a minute, slice in half, and serve warm.
Notes
Swap cheddar for mozzarella or Swiss for a lighter option. Using whole-grain bread adds fiber. Pair with a salad or homemade soup.
