Ingredients

  • 1 cup sourdough discard
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease an 8×8 inch baking pan.
  2. In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over low heat.
  3. Once melted, remove the saucepan from heat and stir in the sugar, eggs, and vanilla until well combined.
  4. Stir in the sourdough discard until smooth.
  5. In a separate bowl, sift together the flour, cocoa powder, and salt.
  6. Gradually add the dry mixture to the wet ingredients, stirring until just combined.
  7. If using, fold in the chocolate chips.
  8. Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and smooth the top.
  9. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out mostly clean with a few moist crumbs.
  10. Allow the brownies to cool in the pan before cutting into squares and serving.

Notes

For a healthier twist, use coconut oil instead of butter and reduce the sugar. They pair well with ice cream or fresh berries.
